Climate Anxiety? Get Involved!

“We have come here to let you know that change is coming, whether you like it or not. The real power belongs to the people.”

Greta Thunberg

With the climate crisis already taking its toll globally with heat waves, drought, and flooding, it makes sense to feel a bit in despair. We would be lying if we said we don’t feel overwhelmed with all the action that is so necessary. But instead of taking that despair and letting it consume you, there are some great actions you can take.

Even Greta Thunberg, well-known 16-year-old Swedish climate activist, felt depressed and hopeless when she learned more about the climate crisis. The direct action she took by sitting at the Swedish Parliament with a sign last August has managed to create a huge impact globally. It showed her she is not alone and eliminated her climate anxiety, because she is truly making a difference and she recommends others to do the same.

Great organizations to get involved with: (not only will you be involved in direct action, but you can be around like-minded people)

United States:

Sunrise Movement

Sierra Club

International and U.S.:

Greenpeace

Extinction Rebellion

While you are staying informed and involved in direct action, make sure to take care of yourself. At the end of the day it may be helpful to write five good things that happened that day to be aware of the positives and not feel bombarded by the overwhelming negativity of the climate crisis. Talking to others and processing your thoughts and feelings with people close to you can help alleviate the stress. Understand that you are doing the best you can.

Remember, there is so much hope! There are many great projects that people and countries are working on to come up with solutions! Germany has implemented a plastic bottle deposit system, holding manufacturers accountable for their products in order to truly be recycled. New Zealand Air recently recalled the use of single-use plastic on shorter flights. New York City and the United Kingdom have declared climate emergencies thanks to the thousands of activists demanding appropriate action.

The best action to take in the climate crisis is to get involved in environmental organizations and demand the change that is so desperately needed. The Sunrise Flagstaff Hub was started by Sara with the help of like-minded individuals. We have the power to make a change!

  1. Yes, that’s why I was happy to find your blog. It’s nice to know like-minded people exists! I’m not involved with organizations but I follow Greenpeace on Facebook. It does help. Thanks for the post!
